The Global Choir: How Technology Creates Fascinating Musical Projects

For most of us, our experience of a choir comes from singing, conducting or being part of an audience.  With the amazing technological advances we enjoy today, the definition of what a choir is has been given some fascinating alternative angles with global music projects based on the internet.  I will be looking at two different examples for the purpose of this article – Eric Whitacre’s Virtual Choir and Playing for Change – but would love to hear from readers about any other such projects taking place.

Virtual Choir

Chances are you’ve probably heard of renowned composer Eric Whitacre.  His first album Light and Gold won him a Grammy award in 2012 as both composer and conductor with the Eric Whitacre Singers.  If you haven’t already listened to his music, it’s well worth taking the time to do so.  I was first introduced through singing Seal Lullaby in our Total Voice Chamber Choir which we performed at the Bournemouth Pavillion.  I thought it was so beautiful and really enjoyed the atmosphere the music created and the beautiful harmonies.
