Turmeric is a powerful Antioxidant
I read your article with interest. Thank you. These lab tests are part of what is called 'a liver panel'. AST and ALT are transaminases, and leak out of liver cells when there is inflammation. This makes sense that a powerful antioxidant will stabilize the inflammatory process. It also makes sense that without turmeric, the enzymes 'bump up'. Elevated liver enzymes can be a result of many kinds of disease processes. It can be alcohol-induced, a normal variant like Gilbert's disease, hepatitis, ischemia, fatty liver, even severe gallbladder disease. Normal is in the tens or twenties, while mild is in the hundreds, and severe is in the thousands on the lab values that show test results. Often bilirubin goes up, and when around three or four people get jaundiced (turn bright lemon yellow skin and whites of the eyes.) The most important things to understand about the liver with disease is robust--ninety percent of the liver can be destroyed by disease and you would not notice much difference. The liver is that strong! And second, do avoid hepatotoxins such as acetaminophen, ethanol, and certain kind of mushrooms. I look forward to learning more about turmeric. I used it myself in smoothies to cure a bad case of sinus infection. It is included in my blog on the Galactic Free Press. Mahalo and aloha.
