In the days ahead our mainstream media outlets will only be able to broadcast pieces of the real truth and LOTS of fear-based speculation. So when your sister-in-law calls you frantically and asks, "what in the world is going on? Are we going to be ok?" Or when your elderly neighbor comes knocking on your door in tears because he's afraid his Social Security Disability checks will stop coming -what will you say?
You know from your own experience that getting too much technical information at once just makes your anxieties worse. What is the balance between calm reassurance and imparting factual information?
So here's your assignment:
Write out what you would say to these people. Do it now while you have the luxury of time to contemplate your words. Try to compose three different messages, one for the initial shock stage, a second one for the period where some information has begun to sink in and now they are ready for more, and finally a longer more detailed version for those people who ask for specifics and the history of how we got to this point.
This assignment will steady your thoughts as a rehearsal so that when the time comes you will be ready to take your place on stage and perform your part to the best of your loving ability.
