Oiler fires on boat in UAE; 1 dead /By Sam Fellman – Staff writer Posted : Monday Jul 16, 2012 11:27:46 EDT

A Navy replenishment ship on Monday fired its machine gun at an inbound boat considered a threat near Jebel Ali in the United Arab Emirates, Navy officials said.

Security teams on the oiler Rappahannock fired on the “small motor vessel after it disregarded warning and rapidly approached” the ship, 5th Fleet spokesman Lt. Greg Raelson said. The crew tried to wave off the approaching boat, employing a “series of non-lethal, preplanned responses” before firing the .50-caliber machine gun.

The Associated Press, quoting a U.S. Consulate official in Dubai and Emirati officials, reported that one person aboard the boat was killed and three were wounded.

SUBSIDING STORM: The geomagnetic storm of July 14th through 16th is subsiding. Solar wind conditions are trending toward quiet, and Earth's magnetic field is responding by settling down. The remarkable 36-hour event was triggered by a CME impact on July 14th around 11 am PDT (1800 UT).

One note about the Euro’s photos, Ben posted them in an upside down configuration, so I include those, plus also the right side up version. Bloomberg reports Finland Firm on Collateral as Spain Aid Terms Discussed

Finland underlined its determination to get collateral in exchange for loans to Spain’s banks as the Nordic country targets similar terms to those won last year on its contribution to Greece’s second bailout.

“We have the requirements of collateral on the loans that are from the temporary vehicle,” Jukka Pekkarinen, director general at the Finnish Finance Ministry in Helsinki, said in an interview in Oslo yesterday. “The details are still open, but the principle standpoint is the same” as in the case of Greece, he said.
