They can be fined seriously for that, its against FAA regulations to fly WITHOUT lighting apparatus after nightfall...I think the coverage as a blimp is BS.
erm,,,
1: The FAA has no juridiction in the U.K. It is a U.S. agency that has jurisdiction over U.S. airspace.
2: The U.K. has their own version of the FAA and who's to say the blimp crew were not given a special permit to go dark beforehand? I'd assume they were one of the ONLY aircraft permitted in the area at that time and any other aircraft alowed in the area would be well aware that it would be hovering over the stadium right then.
3: With all the missile batteries around London, if it WAS an unidentified object, it would have had a whole bunch of missile battery crews running around with their hair on fire about it...
4: Get a grip. A reasonably light grey blimp is basically a giant oval, somewhat dark movie screen and the flickering lights is just reflected light from the fireworks. Or maybe swamp gas. Reflecting off Venus. Yeha. That's it. Now if you would just look at the shiny silver pen for a moment.... ;)

As an active European pilot pilot I am very familiar with the European JAR/FCL regulations and can confirm that navigation and anti collision light are required and not visible on the object. Goodyear also stated officialy that the zeppelin was grounded and the renewed shots with filters gives clearly confirmation of a disc shaped object. I have seen also a shot on youtube where a helicopter (with the navigation lights on) approach the object and in a eye blink, the object is gone...

Well, it looked like a flying
Well, it looked like a flying hat to me and then a flying ring. It had no resemblence to the Goodyear blimp at all unless they are now shaped like hats.
