A long-duration B-flare from the vicinity of AR1582 hurled a CME toward Earth on Oct. 5th. Credit: SDO/HMI EMERGING CME: A coronal mass ejection (CME) left the sun this morning, Oct. 5, and it could be heading for Earth. Orbiting at the L1 Lagrange point, the Solar and Heliosphere Observatory captured this image of the expanding cloud:
The source of the cloud was an eruption of magnetic fields surrounding sunspot 1582. Based on the size and speed of the CME, as well as the location of the blast site, a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field is likely on October 8th around 11:00
