My first birth was at home and it was fantastic. I had a little hemorrhaging because my baby's umbilical cord was too short and it tore the placenta off from my uterus during delivery. My midwife gave me some sort of gross, cinnamonny tincture to drink and it stopped the bleeding. She also came back every week for 1 month to check up on me and baby. And helped me recover from anemia and helped baby and I get a good latch for nursing. Before labor she kept an eye on me through prenatal appointments, monitoring me without using scare tactics about all that "could" go wrong during my pregnancy. She also taught me lots of alternative but effective ways to have a healthy pregnancy, including correcting some wrong information doctors like to give out (especially about salt intake). And, she cost a fraction of seeing a doctor for prenatal appointments and giving birth in a hospital.

My birth was amazing. I chose a water birth and the pool helped reduce my pain and made it easier to support myself in whatever position I wanted to be in. The midwife let me do my own thing and mostly just watched over me to make sure everything was ok. When it was time, she told me to reach down and catch my own baby, so I actually delivered my baby myself!
And afterward it was great because I got to sleep in my own bed. I didn't have to ride in the car to the hospital in labor, and I didn't have to ride home. I also didn't have to worry about baby and I catching any of those scary hospital bugs.

I had such a great experience. I'm currently pregnant again and I immediately called up the midwife I had used before and got on her client list again. She makes me feel empowered, helps me trust my body, and knows what's really healthy for babies and mothers, unlike a lot of junk the doctors do that actuary cause more problems and lead to more pain and more c-sections.

I absolutely advocate home birth for mothers without high risk pregnancies. Normal birth is a natural event, not a medical event. All mothers should educate themselves and then make a decision based on that. There are even birth centers or hospital births with a doula for those who don't want to do it at home. Hospitals are businesses and if we act like consumers and stop putting up with their bad practices, they will have to adopt better practices.
