I use a program called Apophysis to generate the fractals and render the animation frame by frame. http://www.apophysis.org/ Very neat program, there's really no limit upon what you can create with it. Takes a while to learn though as it's quite complicated.

 

After I generate the individual images, I use Photoshop for the animated .gifs and Sony Vegas for the video.
