Oiler fires on boat in UAE; 1 dead /By Sam Fellman – Staff writer Posted : Monday Jul 16, 2012 11:27:46 EDT

A Navy replenishment ship on Monday fired its machine gun at an inbound boat considered a threat near Jebel Ali in the United Arab Emirates, Navy officials said.

Security teams on the oiler Rappahannock fired on the “small motor vessel after it disregarded warning and rapidly approached” the ship, 5th Fleet spokesman Lt. Greg Raelson said. The crew tried to wave off the approaching boat, employing a “series of non-lethal, preplanned responses” before firing the .50-caliber machine gun.

The Associated Press, quoting a U.S. Consulate official in Dubai and Emirati officials, reported that one person aboard the boat was killed and three were wounded.
