The recent case of a homeless man racking up massive fines has exposed the widespread police practice of fining homeless people for being homeless.

Émilie Guimond-Bélanger, a social worker at the Droits Devant legal clinic in Montreal spoke to the media about a case that she worked on where a homeless man racked up over $110,000 in tickets.

“It was shocking. We’ve never seen someone with so many tickets,” Émilie told CBC.

The man had over 500 tickets, which amounted to over $110,000 in fines. The fines were mostly for things that homeless people can’t control, such as sleeping in the subway or asking people for money.

“He had received around 500 of them [tickets]. I could see that most of the time he would receive many in the same week, sometimes by the same officers as well,” she said.

“It’s very common, to a point where I would say it’s a systematic experience for homeless people,” she added.

On a daily basis, Émilie deals with at least two cases where people owe at least $10,000 for the crime of being homeless.

Now city officials are trying something relatively new: paying commuters to bike to work. France tried this in 2014, when employees were offered 25 cents per kilometer traveled, but the program failed due to lack of citizen participation.

Religion has caused a lot of unnecessary pain to mankind, despite whatever truth and good intentions their followers may hold. Restrictive, false and dangerous religious beliefs abound throughout the world, and dominate the mainstream teachings of organized religion.

Some of these dangerous religious beliefs fool you into thinking you can out-source your morality, ethics or spirituality to some external organization. Others prevent you from taking full responsibility for yourself and your actions, thus hindering you from stepping fully into your power. Others goad you into a false sense of security where there is none. All of them limit you and the deeper realization of Who You Are, and all of them stem from the single fundamental delusion of separateness, i.e. that we are discrete and separate beings, that some people are better than others and that there is somewhere better you need to get to. It is an idea based on separateness leads to judgment and exclusion, and can never be as true and powerful as one based on connectedness.

Health officials and establishment doctors in West Virginia are not happy about giving the public greater access to raw milk. 

The governor of West Virginia recently signed a new bill that will make it easier for some people to access and consume raw cow’s milk, which may surprise those who had no idea that it is largely illegal in the United States to share, trade, or buy raw, unpasteurized milk.

On March 3, 2016, Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin, signed new legislation that would allow people to share ownership of a dairy animal in a legal arrangement called “herd sharing,” which allows for the owners to receive milk from that animal for personal consumption. One of the stipulations of the bill (SB 387) is that the individuals who purchase the animal must sign a disclaimer, verifying that they acknowledge the potential risks associated with consuming raw milk. West Virginia’s Department of Agriculture will also distribute rules regulating consumption and require health tests for the animals.
