Researchers suggest children’s social skills are declining as they have less time for face-to-face interaction due to their increased use of digital media, according to a UCLA psychology study. Scientists found that sixth-graders who went five days without even glancing at a smartphone, television or other digital screen did substantially better at reading human emotions than sixth-graders from the same school who continued to spend hours each day looking at their electronic devices.

The study, published in the journal Computers in Human Behavior, studied two groups of sixth-graders from a Southern California public school. One group was sent to the Pali Institute, an outdoor education camp in Running Springs, Calif., where the kids had no access to electronic devices. For the other group, it was life as usual.

“Many people are looking at the benefits of digital media in education, and not many are looking at the costs,” said Patricia Greenfield, a distinguished professor of psychology in the UCLA College and senior author of the study. “Decreased sensitivity to emotional cues — losing the ability to understand the emotions of other people — is one of the costs. The displacement of in-person social interaction by screen interaction seems to be reducing social skills.”

Our connection with all things in the universe is infinite.  This is because we are not separate from the universe of the things that are within it.  We are literally made of the same fabric of all things in existence, including time and space.  This fabric is consciousness itself, and is the fundamental building block of physical reality.

One of the most essential aspects of spirituality is the level of connection we have to the world around us.  We all know that we are all one.  But how do we translate knowing we are one in our minds into something that is real and tangible?  How can we FEEL like we are one with everything?

Feeling at one with the universe is not done by looking at a tree and trying to convince yourself you are one with it.  It doesn’t require any belief system and mind games in order to step into unity consciousness.  All it requires is that we begin to connect with deeper, more fundamental levels of reality.

What if you put your faith in love again, and rather than being on high alert for the lack of it, you started looking for the evidence of the love that exists in you and for you? For many of us, being called “selfish” is worse than any four letter word that you can imagine. In fact, the fear of being labeled “selfish” often causes us to ignore our own important needs and deepest desires. When our entire lives are shaped around the foreboding dread of appearing selfish, not only do we suppress expression, we also disregard what would bring us the most joy in life. We might even stay trapped in jobs and long term relationships well past their expiration date, simply because we are afraid that our choices might be deemed self-serving to others.

On the spiritual path, or even the path of being a “good person,” we are often told to think of others before ourselves. Maybe as children, we were taught that it is bad to be selfish or we were even punished for thinking of ourselves first. In theory, it might sound nice to put others’ needs before our own, but when we constantly put ourselves last without question, we stay asleep and disempowered.
