Is there a connection between barbie and a woman’s body image? Since the average American girl between the ages of three and ten owns several Barbie dolls, the effects of Barbie and body image run deeper than just a doll owned by millions of girls. There is a large and growing body of literature that shows the negative impact these toys have on developing children.

Research has for years linked women’s exposure to barbie and photos of skinny supermodels with feelings of inadequacy about their own bodies. A 2006 University of Sussex study said that Barbies and similar toys “may damage girls’ body image, which would contribute to an increased risk of disordered eating and weight cycle.”

Lund University in Sweden recently did the first randomized study to compare group mindfulness treatment with individual cognitive behavioral therapy on patients who have depression and anxiety.

“Group mindfulness treatment is as effective as individual cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in patients with depression and anxiety, according to a new study. This is the first randomized study to compare group mindfulness treatment and individual cognitive behavioral therapy in patients with depression and anxiety in primary health care.” - Lund University

Medicine is starting to see evidence of the need for holistic care in their practices.  We no longer can just treat the symptoms people having with physical and mental illness.  We need to see the person as they are… real people!  Individuals that have cultures, beliefs, families, dreams, hopes, and spiritual beliefs.

The holiday season is officially here and I’m here to deliver some shocking news: Santa isn’t real.

When I was a kid (and slightly nerdier than I am today) I remember trying to prove he existed. Whether that be by staying up late on Christmas Eve or trying to calculate just how fast his sled would have to travel to hit every kid’s home in one night, I was determined to believe in him.

The trouble was that for most of my life, I wanted to believe in everything but myself. No matter how outlandish it might seem, it was easier to believe in unicorns (which I do) than the idea that I’m perfect exactly as I am.

Not believing in myself sabotaged every area of my life:

• I didn’t apply to jobs out of fear they’d reject me
• I dated assholes
• I didn’t set or maintain any boundaries

Tensions in the United States have been high since last week’s grand jury decision not to indict officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of unarmed Ferguson, Missouri teen Michael Brown. President Obama weighed in on Monday, proposing new funding meant to help improve relations between the police and the communities they serve, and to address the “simmering distrust” between the two groups.

President Obama has requested $263 million in funding for police to be equipped with body cameras and additional training in the wake of Michael Brown’s death. This program, which requires congressional approval, would offer $75 million a year for three years to match state funding for the cameras, which would pay for 50,000 of the devices.
