A Globalized Food System

The current industrial agricultural model has benefited human populations (above all else) over the last century, taking the human population from approximately 1.6 billion people in the early 1900’s to over 7 billion people on 31st of October 2011. The widespread clearance of land across all continents for agriculture, combined with the use of heavy machinery and artificial fertilizers, has contributed to the widespread exploitation of the planet and ecosystems on a scale never seen before.

Long Distance Supply Chains Unsustainable

A study by the Centre for Environmental Studies (CERES) out of Australia examined how far the average basket of goods travelled to get to the consumer. It was established that the basket of regular goods travelled a total of 70,803 km, equivalent to travelling nearly twice around the circumference of the Earth (40,072 km). The data-collected total greenhouse gas emissions estimate for all food trucks transporting all road-transported food items, over the total road transport distance, was 16, 989 tonnes (t) CO2–e. If all the food trucks were transporting all food items on the same day, the emissions from this one day of transportation (16, 989 t CO2–e), is equivalent to 4,247 cars driving for one year. (1)

Breast Implants: The Ticking Time Bomb In Millions Of Women’s Bodies

They do not last. They rupture. And the longer they’re in the body the more likely they are to rupture. The statistics are kind of scary, because around about 50 percent are ruptured by 10 years. And when it gets to 15 to 20 years you’re looking at almost 90 percent of implants that are ruptured.

What is most worrisome is that while most of the silicone is contained within the capsule, some of it leaks out, we don’t know where it goes, we don’t know what it does, we have no idea. – Dr. Ed Melmed, Board Certified Plastic Surgeon

Each year in the United States approximately 300,000 women and teenagers undergo breast augmentation. It’s thought that the total number of implants carried out each year worldwide is anywhere between 5 to 10 million.

How To Quiet Your Mind In Even The Loudest Settings

Submitted by Galactic Free Press on Sat, 10/24/2015 - 09:51

The building where I used to run a meditation group was on the same street as a fire station; one could almost guarantee that sometime during the meditation a fire engine would come rushing past, sirens wailing. Not surprisingly, people would afterwards complain: “How could I meditate with that going on?”

How often have we felt something similar? There’s an unspoken assumption that the mind can only become quiet if the world around it is quiet. We imagine the ideal meditation setting to be somewhere far from the madding crowd—a retreat deep in a forest, a peaceful chapel, or the quiet of one’s own bedroom, perhaps. It is much harder for the mind to settle down in a noisy environment. Or is it?

I suggested to the group that the next time a fire engine came blasting by they look within and explore whether the sound really was that disturbing? After the following meditation, a participant reported how the noise no longer seemed a problem; it was there, but it didn’t disturb her. The disturbance, she realized, came not from the sound itself, but from wishing it weren’t there.

Patricia makes landfall in Mexico, major flooding ongoing

Submitted by Galactic Free Press on Sat, 10/24/2015 - 09:45

Hurricane "Patricia" slammed into the coast of southwestern Mexico on October 23, 2015, with winds reaching 270 km/h (165 mph) and was downgraded to a category 2 hurricane since, National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported. So far no victims have been reported, and the damage seems to be much less than feared, at first sight. However, this is still a dangerous system and shouldn't be underestimated, Mexico's president warned, following Patricia's landfall.

Patricia made landfall 85 km (55 miles) of Manzanillo, near Cuixmala, along the coast of southwestern Mexico on October 23, 23:15 UTC, NHC reported. The system slammed the land as a category 5 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 270 km/h (165 mph). Its minimum central pressure was estimated at 920 hPa at the time.

Strongest October snow ever recorded in Kashmir, India

Submitted by Galactic Free Press on Sat, 10/24/2015 - 09:44

First snowfall of the year seems to have arrived a bit early to parts of Kashmir valley, India, media reported on October 20, 2015.

Cold temperature across parts of Kashmir prevailing since mid-October have caused the unusual snowfall in higher parts of the valley. About 61 cm (2 feet) of snowfall was recorded between October 18 and 20 on Peer Ki Gali, the highest spot on Mughal Road, 3 352.8 m (11 000 feet) in altitude.

Due to bad weather conditions the road connecting Kashmir valley with Pirpanjal region has been closed to traffic leaving over 500 trucks stranded.

Local meteorologists claim to have no record of a snowfall of this strength for the month of October: "I can only say there was heavy rains across the Valley in October 2010 and we assume there might have been a snowfall in higher reaches that year. But we have no record of it," said Sonum Lotus, director of the Meteorological Department in Srinagar.

Flowers Used in Chinese Herbal Medicine

Herbal therapies are an integral part of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). While there are 5,767 substances defined in the Encyclopedia of Traditional Chinese Medicinal Substances, a typical practitioner may routinely use between 200 and 600.

Most often, the herbs (a combination of one to 13 different plants) are added to water and boiled. The liquid is then separate from the herbs and drunk as a water decoction.

The herbs may also be consumed in powdered form, spray-dried concentrates, pill form, or even “honey pills,” which are “prepared by combining powdered herbs with concentrated decoctions and honey to produce a small herbal pill.”1

Using a Non-Stick Pan? You May Want to Read This

Pans with a non-stick coating are convenient but new research suggests that the chemical used for the coating is extremely toxic and exposure on any level could prove dangerous to brain health, the reproductive system, and immune system.

The Dangers of Non-Stick Coating

DuPont, the chemical engineering giant, is responsible for the perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) used to make Teflon coating. Federal regulators linked the chemical to birth defects and cancer, and these regulators also accused DuPont of hiding these hazard reports for decades. This caused an uproar and forced DuPont to phase out production of the chemical in 2006. Regardless, PFOA has already infiltrated millions of homes; resulting in detectable amounts of the compound in the blood of nearly every American. It’s even been found in polar bears in the Arctic.

CEOs Panic: Europe Rules Corporate Tax Loopholes Are Illegal

Submitted by Galactic Free Press on Sat, 10/24/2015 - 09:04

The European Commission’s ruling is the result of years of sustained activism from anti-austerity groups like UK Uncut.

Thanks to a new ruling from the European Commission, Starbucks and Fiat are now finally being forced to pay their fair share of taxes, as tax loopholes benefiting multinational corporations with accounts in European countries known for their tax haven status have been ruled illegal.

After 5 years of direct action and organizing from the grassroots, anti-austerity movement UK Uncut, which ties corporate tax avoidance to public service cuts, the movement can claim another major victory — particularly in regards to Starbucks, as UK Uncut has targeted the company for years due to its reputation as a notorious corporate tax avoider.
