7 Ways to Learn from Your Negative Thoughts

I remember when I first learned about “positive thinking.” I was to observe my thoughts, then sort them into “useful” and “not useful.”

This made sense to me, and it surprised me how many “not useful” thoughts I encountered. On a daily basis, I was telling myself that I was not good enough, that things could never work out, and that I was on the verge of being fired from my job.

Create clean technology: that’s Manoj Bargahva’s mantra. He’s the mind behind the small 5-Hour Energy drink bottle you see sold in stores on almost every corner. Worth around $4 billion dollars, Bargahva has pledged to use 90%  of that money to serve others around the globe. He feels a certain responsibility to invent and invest in products and technology which will help poorer people (particularly those still living in unindustrialized communities) achieve a decent quality of life.  Manoj sees this starting with having power and water.

According to the World Bank, around 1.1 billion people around the globe still do not have access to electricity. About 2.9 billion use solid fuels — wood, charcoal, coal, and dung — for cooking and heating. One of Manoj’s stipulations in creating new technologies is that they must not have a negative impact on the planet. He says “that’s the ideal invention,” explaining that  “simple stuff is the greatest, because it impacts everything and doesn’t have unintended consequences.”

Gratitude is one of the most powerful tools you have as a human being. It is so much more than being polite. It is a profoundly effective manifestation tool, as it provides feedback to the universe on what you wish to expand and multiply. It anchors the energy of what you prefer to experience. In fact, you could consider it to be an energetic sorting tool, as well as the steering wheel of the flow.

Gratitude also helps you connect with the Now moment. It allows you to acknowledge the magic and abundance that exists all around you, if only you have eyes to see. Gratitude allows you to see how loved and supported you are, and to expand into even more of that experience of love, because it is, in effect, sending love and appreciation back. There was a Granny who had a brace of flying ducks. They spent most of their time sitting and resting on a nearby shed watching the neighbourhood. Every now and then Granny would catch a duck for a dinner. She  threw duck food on the ground then waited for them to come closer until  she was able to catch one after a short chase.

Years passed and Granny no longer had the strength to chase ducks. But she had an idea. She pulled a few feathers from each duck tail to stop them flying away from her. It solved the problem, but what happened next was totally unexpected.

The new generation of ducks born from non flying parents did not even try to fly. They had all the  feathers needed to be able to fly but no one to show them that they could. The best they could do with their wings was merely correct their balance or fly just above the ground, which felt more like fast running. They led their lives in a flat world never being aware of the true potential of their wings.

A good friend of mine, a member of the Republic of Lakotah, had a meeting with her first grade son’s elementary school principal. Apparently, her six-year-old was being defiant in classroom. What were these defiant actions? Well, upon his teacher explaining Columbus Day and honoring the courageous and brave sailor who discovered this land in 1492, he had a couple of questions for the teacher. He wanted to know how it was possible that Christopher Columbus discovered a land in which his ancestors had lived for over 30,000 years, he wanted to know what happened to all the people who lived here in 1491, and he wanted to know why the man responsible for invading his native land and slaughtering his ancestors was being honored.

Fun is not a flighty unimportant part of life. It is an essential part of life. Children are supposed to have fun. Life is supposed to be fun. As it is, children are sometimes chastised for having fun as if the purpose of your raising your child is to squelch them.

If I were to give advice to parents, I would say:

Have fun with your children. You, the parent, have a good time. This is an exquisite time with your child. It will not come again.

This is a double-whammy, because as you have fun, you ensure that your children do.

When you and your child have fun together, you are raising your child well. You don’t need to think so sternly about raising your children. When your children have fun and enjoy with you, you are raising your children well. They will listen to you and respect you and, in turn, be loving and gracious to you and to everyone.

You are introducing your children to the world. Make the world a friendly place for your children, and they will know friendliness.

You are not spoiling your child by allowing him happiness.

As a parent, you need to get away from the idea that your child has to perform as the best behaved child at home or away. You are not spoiling your child by accepting and loving him. This is not letting your child go wild. Give your child the freedom to be happy.
