Science and religion often seem poles apart–and in many ways they are. But I believe the two can, and will eventually be, united; and their meeting point will be human consciousness.

That we are conscious beings is the most obvious fact of our existence. Indeed, all we ever know are the thoughts, images, and feelings arising in our consciousness. Yet as far as Western science is concerned, there is nothing more difficult to explain. Why should the complex processing of information in the brain lead to an inner personal experience? Why doesn’t it all go on in the dark, without any awareness? Why do we have any inner life at all?

This paradox–the undeniable existence of human consciousness set against the absence of any satisfactory scientific account for it–suggests there may be something amiss with the current scientific worldview. Most scientists assume that consciousness emerges in some way or other from insentient matter...

I gave Grand Rounds at One Medical in San Francisco. For those of you not familiar with Grand Rounds, it’s a lecture where all the doctors gather in the hospital to learn about the latest research. The lectures tend to be dry- lots of data, lots of slides, lots of science- and it’s not the sort of format that lends itself to debate or discussion afterwards.

I’ve been speaking all over the country on my book tour for Mind Over Medicine, and most of the audiences are a mix of empowered patients, conscious doctors, alternative health care providers, and hospital staff. I’m also training very open-minded doctors in the Whole Health Medicine Institute, so I have some experience speaking to doctors.

With increasing demand on the global market for foodstuffs free of genetically modified organisms, U.S. farmers face a serious economic dilemma. Even those who grow non-GMO conventional or organic crops are at risk for economic losses due to cross-contamination with genetically modified pollen. Corn shipments rejected by China, which were contaminated with the genetically modified Bt gene, have already cost American farmers over $4 billion since November 2013. Projections indicate that these losses will only gain momentum as more people wake up to the dangers of GMOs around the world. Outright GMO bans have already been implemented by several countries like France, Russia and China.

Creative solutions are needed — and soon. As luck would have it, plant breeder Frank Kutka has been working for nearly 15 years to develop a breed that has the ability to prevent cross-contamination in corn.

There is enough for everyone. Our magnificent earth provides an abundance of food, energy, natural medicine, and building supplies that could easily meet the needs of everyone on this planet. Mother Earth does not charge money for any of these things, but our artificial economic system creates lack, scarcity and a slave civilization. We are killing our world and ourselves with poison food, toxic water, and polluted air, not to mention depression, anxiety, poverty and a host of other socio-economic issues – all caused or related to the global economic system.

It appears very easy to blame corrupt world leaders, governments, corporations and a host of other problematic sources — but the system continues because we agree to it. Perhaps, our agreement is complacent, but nonetheless, our lack of non-agreement perpetuates the dysfunction.
